Resources for Uniting Earth Ministry

Jessica Morthorpe is a new Uniting Earth Ministry Consultant, sharing the role with Rev. Dr. Jason John. Together, and as part of the Uniting Mission and Education Resource Team, they will be working to resource the Uniting Church in NSW/ACT to do mission for the reconciliation and renewal of the whole creation!

Although born in NSW, Jessica grew up in Victoria, and has recently moved back east from Perth, WA, She is keen to build a picture of what is happening in NSW/ACT churches for the environment as quickly as possible, so please help her out by filling out the Five Leaf Eco-Awards survey or sending her an email anytime.

Also, I would like to remind you of/introduce you to some resources for your church’s eco-journey this year:

  1. Sign up to our newsletter  To find out all the news about Uniting Earth Ministry, and receive resources and information, please sign up for our monthly   Uniting Earthweb Newsletter.
  2. One of our major projects in 2017 will be helping to organise the Community Climate Petition: Later this year, the Federal government will review its climate policy. We think this is an important moment to send a strong message that our Christian faith calls us to care about our neighbours and future generations and therefore we want strong action on climate change. One petition in one electorate might be possible to ignore. Any number of email petitions can be deleted. But one hundred-and-fifty old-school, pen-and-paper petitions, gathered by churches, faith communities, schools, businesses and community groups across all of Australia’s 150 electorates is hard to ignore. By coordinating our efforts, handing the petitions to MPs at one key moment, and having our requests heard by Parliament, we will make it impossible to ignore.
  3. Five leaf eco-awards

Join the Five Leaf Eco-Awards  The Five Leaf Eco-Awards are an ecumenical environmental change program I established in 2008 to help all churches become more environmentally friendly and to recognise their achievements through a series of awards.
Now national, the Five Leaf Eco-Awards have been very successful, with 26 churches receiving awards, and many more around the country involved in the program.
(In 2016, the Uniting Church in Australia Synod of Western Australia passed a resolution encouraging all their congregations to get involved in this exciting program and their work.)We feel certain that there are also many churches in NSW/ACT who are eligible for Five Leaf Eco-Awards, but may not have heard about the program yet.

It is very easy to get involved and find out how green your church is by simply filling out this survey:

Please take five minutes to complete this survey now, and share the word among your ecumenical and inter-state contacts that these awards are available and it would be great to have their church involved.

How to help:

Register – To make this as effective as we can we need to coordinate who is doing what and where. It’s therefore really important that you register here.
Your details will only be used for this campaign.

After registering, you will be sent the specific petition for your electorate.

When you register there are two options!
You can become a Principal Petitioner – this is someone who is willing to have their name on the petition and is involved in helping to organise the handover event with the MP
You can become a Petition Organiser – this is someone who collects signatures on the petition in their church, school, and / or community.
For more information go to Micah Australia and download the Community Climate Petition Guide & a sample petition.
