For such a time as this – booklet is a call to prayer

From Canberra Region Presbytery Chairperson, Vanessa Crimmins

for such a time cmykLate last year the Catholic Women’s Commission contacted the Presbytery to ask if we would be interested in doing something about family violence.  We, along with the Anglicans, were invited to meet together to discuss what could be done.  At the first meeting, I asked Ranjini Wickramaratne-Rebera from Gungahlin Uniting Church and Community Centre and Delia Quigley from Tuggeranong Uniting to attend with me.

The result of that initial meeting is the booklet, For Such a Time As This. It is this Presbytery’s contribution to An Ecumenical Response to Domestic Violence, “For Such a Time As This,” which is being held by the Catholic Commission of Women, on 18 June, 9.30am to 4pm (BYO lunch) at the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, Barton – more information on this event follows the description of the booklet and its call to prayer below. FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS – THE BOOKLET:

Ranjini wrote the stories with input from Delia who drew on her long experience as an

Australian Federal Police officer trained in this area.  Ranjini explains the way the stories were put together in the booklet so read her preface please.

The booklet is a call to prayer for all people of faith.  It provides a glimpse of the range of family violence occurring in our neighbourhoods.  I hope the stories inspire heartfelt, compassionate prayer for victims, perpetrators, those would would pass by and those who want to help but do not know how to draw alongside those suffering.  As well as for ourselves.

Family violence is a dark and bloody battlefield.  It is my fervent hope that we will stand in the gap and pray for those whose spirit has been wounded and for the breaking of the cycle of generational violence.  Let us unite to bring the love of Jesus into this space and pray for the redemptive and healing light of God to restore shattered lives.

I ask you to read the book, seek understanding, and pray as the Holy Spirit leads you.

Please pray every day for one year, even just a few words or heart-felt thoughts, each day will help.  The booklet is the prompt, the prayer is the purpose of this publication.

There is a booklet for all members of congregations of this Presbytery which your Presbytery representatives will bring to you along with this edition of Perspective.  One great thing about an ageing population of believers is that we have lots of great pray-ers!

I believe if the 2000+ members of this presbytery join together in prayer, lives will be affected, healing will happen and we will give God the glory.  Let’s be the change agents we are called to be, you salt of the earth people!
