The Safe Shelter project for homeless men is calling for volunteers to staff the overnight
shelter, in St Columba’s Church, Braddon during the coming winter.
The 2014 program will build on the experience gained in the 2013 pilot project and involve training for the volunteers. They will then be asked to work in teams of 3 to provide basic, sleeping-on-the-floor, overnight shelter in St Columba’s Lewis Hall on Fawkner Street, Braddon. Once trained, volunteers will be asked to commit to no more that one night each month.
Depending on the numbers of trained volunteers, it is hoped Safe Shelter will be able to
provide overnight shelter on 2 or 3 nights each week, between Anzac Day and early October.
Volunteers are asked to e-mail safeshelteract[at]gmail.com for more details and to be given the program for the training courses, which take place over two evenings. They then select which training evenings they can attend, and apply for their Working With Vulnerable People cards from the ACT Government.
