Briony Griffiths (Bri) has recently commenced in the new Community Development Worker role for ACT. Engaged by UnitingCare NSW ACT, Briony will work in cooperation with congregations, the Presbytery, UnitingCare and local service networks to build on local community service initiatives and existing capacity and interests to secure effective and sustainable services.
This position has been created as a direct follow-up to requests from congregations for assistance in identifying ways to engage with and support disadvantaged or vulnerable people within their communities.
Briony has 13 years experience in International Development with a focus on commu-nity development, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation, and gender and development. She has worked in South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and the Philippines and has travelled extensively.
In PNG, Briony was a coordinator of the AusAID funded Church Partnership Program – a program which brought together seven PNG churches and their Australian counterparts to build capacity for advocacy and governance, institutional strengthening, and improved basic service delivery.
Over the coming months Briony is available to meet with congregations to better under-stand their current community service approaches and/or aspirations for the future. She is expecting to have lots of cups of tea! Briony will also be planning an ACT Community Service “Round-up” for early February 2013, at which updates on new ACT legislation and support for compliance will be discussed, along with updates on changes at UnitingCare NSW ACT.
Briony is based at the Presbytery office
