St Andrew’s Uniting Church in Yass celebrated the centenary of its church building in May, giving thanks for the work and witness of the former Presbyterian and Methodist and now Uniting congregations in the district.
The weekend began with the Parish Fair on Friday, 12 May and continued on the Saturday with a display in the hall. On Saturday afternoon a Hymn Fest was held to celebrate the purchase of the church’s new organ and this was followed by dinner. On the Sunday morning more than 150 people gathered for a worship service led by Rev. Nau Ahosivi with former ministers participating. Guests included Rev. Neville and Mrs Mollie Guthrey, Rev. Alan and Mrs Lee Lowe, Reverends Val and David Sloane, Rev. Bronwyn and Kingsley Murphy and their family and Rev. Beth Howard.
Special visitors were Mrs Margaret Woodcraft and her son Rowan, from Brisbane. Mrs Woodcrafts father Rev. Gresham was the Presbyterian minister in the 1920s. Mrs Janet Prenter and her sons Ian and Jordan travelled from Tasmania to be part of the celebrations. The late Hugh Prenter was the Presbyterian minister from 1946. Ma’adi and Jane Miller, wife and daughter of the late George Miller, also were present.
The display of local photos and items in the hall gave a great overview of the life and witness of families and ministers at Bookham, Yass, Rye Park, Mundoonan, Murrumbateman and Wee Jasper from the 1880s to the present. Sue Pacey and Daryl Lightfood, the Presbyterian and Uniting Church archivists, presented a display linking the story of the Yass congregations to the history of the wider church.
Sue and Daryl were both actively associated with Brian Carruthers over many months in researching the history of St Andrew’s and the other former Presbyterian and Methodist congregations incorporated over the years into the Yass Parish of the Uniting Church.
The book of the St Andrew‚’s history contains a wealth of material and photographs not previously published. Copies may be ordered from Mr Brian Carruthers at PO Box 142 Yass 2582 at $20 per copy, post paid. Presbyterian and Methodist and now Uniting congregations in the district.
